Google Ads for plumbers puts your business in front of people looking for help. Start with the jobs you want: fixing a leak, clearing a drain or replacing a water heater. Use this guide to prepare your first campaign around those requests.
1. Organize your campaign by service
Start with a Search campaign: these are text ads in Google search results. Create an ad group for each service, with its own keywords and ads.
| Ad group | Example keywords | Ad message |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent leaks | emergency plumber ; water leak repair | Explain leak repairs, hours and service area. |
| Drain cleaning | drain cleaning service ; clogged drain plumber | Offer help with blocked drains. |
| Water heaters | water heater replacement ; water heater installation | Explain how to arrange a replacement estimate. |
| Bathroom plumbing | bathroom plumbing installation ; shower installation | Describe the bathroom plumbing work you offer. |
Keep the groups that match your services. They share the campaign budget. Google explains this structure.
Performance Max can also show ads across other Google channels, such as YouTube; consider it only as an addition if your budget allows.
2. Choose words your customers use
Think like the customer: what problem would they type into Google? These ten starting ideas belong in the matching service groups.
| Keyword to use | Why | Leave out if… |
|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber ; water leak repair | Find help with a leak. | You do not offer urgent repairs. |
| drain cleaning service ; clogged drain plumber | Book drain clearing. | You do not clear drains. |
| water heater replacement ; water heater installation | Replace a water heater. | You do not install water heaters. |
| bathroom plumbing installation ; shower installation | Plan bathroom plumbing work. | You do not provide this work. |
| plumber near me ; plumbing repair service | Find a local plumber. | The request is outside your service area. |
Start with exact and phrase match: these options focus on searches close to the service you choose. About ten keywords are a useful starting point for reviewing inquiries.
If a few narrow keywords limit delivery, add relevant searches or try phrase match. Check other possible causes in our guide to a Google Ads campaign not spending.
3. Filter searches that do not fit your work
Negative keywords help filter unwanted searches. Start with these ideas while keeping searches that fit your work.
| Exclusion | Why | Only if… |
|---|---|---|
| plumber jobs ; plumber salary | Looking for work, not a repair. | This campaign is not for hiring. |
| plumbing course ; DIY plumbing | Looking for training or instructions. | You only sell plumbing services. |
| plumbing parts for sale | Shopping for parts alone. | You do not sell retail parts. |
Do not exclude every use of “free” if you offer a free estimate. See Google’s negative keyword help.
4. Write an ad for each service
Name the service, explain the next step and send the customer to the right page. Use these two examples as a starting point.
Describe the leak and request a plumbing repair in our service area.
Tell us about your water heater and arrange an appointment for an estimate.
A drain-cleaning ad should lead to a drain-cleaning page with a clear contact option. A bathroom plumbing ad should show the work offered and explain how to request an estimate.
5. Set a simple budget
For example, $20 a day is about $600 a month. This illustrates a test budget; it is not a recommended amount for every business.
Choose an amount the business can afford to test. Actual daily spend can vary; Google explains its spending limits. Keep advertising spend separate from software fees.
6. Check hours, service area and inquiries
Run ads when you can answer the phone and accept the work. Do not promise overnight help if you only work during the day. For planned installations, check your available appointment slots.
The American Red Cross explains frozen-pipe risks. Cold-weather services make sense only in the climates and areas you cover.
- Test the phone number and form on your mobile.
- Make the service area easy to find.
- Record whether each inquiry fits work you can accept.
