Google Ads for auto repair shops can put your services in front of drivers who need an appointment. An oil change, a brake problem and a warning light call for different ads. Use this guide to build a simple campaign for the work your shop accepts.
1. Organize your campaign by service
Start with a Search campaign: these are text ads in Google search results. Create an ad group for each service, with its own keywords and ads.
| Ad group | Example keywords | Ad message |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | oil change service ; scheduled car maintenance | Offer a maintenance appointment. |
| Brakes | brake repair service ; brake pad replacement | Describe your brake service. |
| Diagnosis | car diagnostic service ; check engine light diagnosis | Ask the driver to describe the problem. |
| Tires | tire replacement shop ; tire installation | Explain how to book a tire appointment. |
Keep the groups that match your services. They share the campaign budget. Google explains this structure.
Performance Max can also show ads across other Google channels, such as YouTube; consider it only as an addition if your budget allows.
2. Choose words your customers use
Think like the customer: what problem would they type into Google? These ten starting ideas belong in the matching service groups.
| Keyword to use | Why | Leave out if… |
|---|---|---|
| oil change service ; scheduled car maintenance | Book routine maintenance. | You do not provide this service. |
| brake repair service ; brake pad replacement | Book brake work. | You do not repair brakes. |
| car diagnostic service ; check engine light diagnosis | Get help with a fault or warning light. | You do not offer diagnosis. |
| tire replacement shop ; tire installation | Arrange tire fitting. | You do not fit tires. |
| auto repair shop near me ; local mechanic | Find a local shop. | The vehicle or location does not fit. |
Start with exact and phrase match: these options focus on searches close to the service you choose. About ten keywords are a useful starting point for reviewing inquiries.
If a few narrow keywords limit delivery, add relevant searches or try phrase match. Check other possible causes in our guide to a Google Ads campaign not spending.
3. Filter searches that do not fit your work
Negative keywords help filter unwanted searches. Start with these ideas while keeping searches that fit your work.
| Exclusion | Why | Only if… |
|---|---|---|
| mechanic jobs ; auto repair school | Looking for work or training. | This campaign is for appointments. |
| used cars for sale ; car rental | Buying or renting a car. | You do not sell or rent vehicles. |
| auto parts ; DIY brake repair | Buying parts alone or finding instructions. | You sell work carried out in the shop. |
Do not exclude every use of “free” if you offer a free estimate. See Google’s negative keyword help.
4. Write an ad for each service
Name the service, explain the next step and send the customer to the right page. Use these two examples as a starting point.
Discuss your maintenance needs and check appointment availability.
Describe the brake issue and arrange an inspection of your vehicle.
An oil-change ad should lead to a maintenance page with a booking option. A diagnostic ad should explain the vehicles accepted and how to arrange an inspection.
5. Set a simple budget
For example, $20 a day is about $600 a month. This illustrates a test budget; it is not a recommended amount for every business.
Choose an amount the business can afford to test. Actual daily spend can vary; Google explains its spending limits. Keep advertising spend separate from software fees.
6. Check hours, service area and inquiries
Before local travel periods, promote maintenance appointments if you have room to accept them. Winter tire advertising makes sense only if it fits your climate and the work your shop provides.
NHTSA lists winter vehicle checks and summer travel checks. Use these topics to explain an actual service, not to promise a repair the vehicle has not yet had.
- Test the phone number and form on your mobile.
- Make the service area easy to find.
- Record whether each inquiry fits work you can accept.
Before launch, use the Google Ads campaign launch checklist.
